A 56-year-old man has died when a motorcycle and car collided at Wallacetown, west of Invercargill, taking the holiday weekend road toll to three.

The accident happened at about 3pm on Monday on State Highway 99, police say.

The man died at the scene and no one else was injured.

The highway has reopened.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

Earlier on Monday, police said 79-year-old Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomare died in Wellington Hospital overnight from the injuries suffered in a head-on crash on State Highway 1 south of Paekakariki late on Sunday morning.

Earlier on Sunday, one person was killed after their car hit a median strip and then a truck on the Southern Motorway near Pokeno.

Five people died last year during the Labour Weekend holiday period which ends at 6am on Tuesday.
