Fatal truck crash in North Canterbury

A person is dead and four others are injured after a truck and two vehicles crashed in North Canterbury, taking the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend road toll to four.

The crash happened on Omihi Road in Greta Valley, which is part of State Highway 1, shortly after 6pm on Saturday, police say.

Diversions are in place southbound at Scargill Valley Road, and northbound at Waipara.

Earlier on Saturday a motorcyclist died after hitting a parked car at speed in the Auckland suburb of Flat Bush and a person died in a head-on crash on State Highway 3 at Tanehopuwai, south of Te Kuiti.

On Friday evening a 64-year-old Kaikoura man was killed in a four-car pile-up on State Highway 1 north of Dunedin.

The official holiday road toll period started at 4pm on Friday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.

Last year five people were killed and 28 seriously injured in 96 crashes during the holiday weekend.
