A father and his six-year-old daughter sailing by catamaran to the Bay of Islands are still feared missing with a police spotter plane failing to locate them.

Alan Langdon, 49, and daughter Que Langdon, left Kawhia Harbour in the Waikato on December 17 but have had no contact with their family since.

On Tuesday, a plane searched the coastline between Mokau and Port Waikato and 6 nautical miles out but Mr Langdon's catamaran was not seen even though conditions were ideal for searching, Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler says.

"Mr Langdon is a very confident and competent sailor and there are no immediate concerns for his welfare, however police need to establish the welfare of Que and Mr Langdon," he says.

Authorities hope to speak to anyone who might have seen the pair on the 6m (21ft)-long catamaran, which is white with blue anti-fouling paint under the waterline.
