The slow-finishing New Zealand Breakers have lost their second game at an NBL pre-season tournament in Brisbane, leaving them still without a win under new coach Paul Henare.

A 79-68 loss to the Cairns Taipans comes two days after they succumbed 94-65 to the Sydney Kings.

Their only other warm-up games ahead of the season start on October 7 were three home games against the Brisbane Bullets, which were all lost.

Henare was again without injured veterans Kirk Penney (calf) and Corey Webster, leaving the Breakers light on scoring ability.

Forward Tom Abercrombie stepped up with 24 points but the only other player in double figures was American import Akil Mitchell (11).

The biggest difference between the teams was turnovers, with the Breakers committing 21 to Cairns' 13.

The Breakers trailed by just a point entering the final quarter, where they were out-scored 26-16.
