A man is in Auckland Hospital fighting for his life after being severely bashed, possibly with a piece of wood, in Whangarei over the weekend.

The 42-year-old was beaten at a house in William Jones Drive in the suburb of Otangarei on Sunday afternoon, police say.

"The victim is reported to have been hit on the head with a piece of wood," police said in a statement.

He was in a critical condition after being transferred from Whangarei Hospital to Auckland for surgery.

Police have spoken to witnesses and are following "positive lines of enquiry". However, they are still calling for any witnesses to contact them.
