New Zealand has given Fiji four amphibious emergency response boats that will be used in a two-year trial.

Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee handed over the boats at a ceremony in Suva on Thursday.

"New Zealand and Fiji have agreed to trial the Sealegs boats in emergency response situations and natural disasters," he said.

"They will complement Fiji's excellent emergency response systems and boost their disaster response capacity."

The $1.2 million trial includes equipment, training, and a maintenance program.
