New Zealand swimmer Daniel Hunter has fallen short of reaching the final in his two specialist freestyle events at the short course world championships in Canada.

Hunter was 23rd quickest in heats of the 100m on Sunday and ninth over 50m a day earlier, the latter in a time of 21.59 seconds which was fractionally outside his national record.

The Auckland 22-year-old contested the semi-finals of the shorter event but was 15th-fastest with 21.70 to miss the final.

New Zealand's other swimmer in Windsor, Ontario is Michael Mincham, who was 14th fastest in the 1500m heats but needed to be 10sec quicker to reach the final.
