A large fire has been put out after tearing through a building used to store chemicals in south Auckland.

The blaze, at the Koppers building in Mayo Road in Wiri, broke out just before 4am on Tuesday, a Fire Service spokesman says.

At its height, 19 fire crews with around 80 firefighters battled the blaze at the three storey, 100sq m building.

They managed to confine the fire to one corner of the structure.

With the fire out, crews are now ventilating the factory and beginning salvage work.
