A blaze that gutted two buildings of the former Kenmure Intermediate School in Dunedin is being treated as suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the fire in Kaikorai Valley Road shortly before 6am on Friday and had to deal with a dangerous site and the prospect of asbestos contamination in the wrecked buildings.

Police and a fire investigator from the Fire Service are investigating the cause of the blaze, a police spokeswoman says.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, she says.
