The Fire Service said it sent ten appliances after crude oil leaked at the refinery and caught fire on the ground about 3.30pm on Saturday.

"We're just containing the crude and letting it burn off and cooling down exposures," a spokesman said.

A spokesman for the refinery said it had an emergency team on site and they had isolated the fire and put it out in a matter of minutes.

He said it was "minor from our point of view".

He said the fire was at the processing site, which is some distance away from oil tanks.

Marsden Point is New Zealand's only oil refinery.
