A fire is spreading in Pureora Forest Park, 47km northwest of Taupo.

The Fire Service was alerted to the fire on Saturday afternoon, a spokesman said.

There are 50 firefighters fighting the fire, which is estimated to cover about seven hectares.

One helicopter is being used to fight the fire and a second is on its way.

There are no reports of injuries and no structures are in danger.

The fire is not yet under control.

Pureora Forest straddles the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto ranges west of Lake Taupo and east of Te Kuiti.

In 1946 it was one of the last native forests to be opened up for logging.

The Department of Conservation manages several historic attractions within the park. The park has walking and mountain biking tracks in it.
