Up to 60 firefighters were needed to battle a massive blaze at Havelock North's Keirunga Gardens.

The fire started some time after 11pm on Tuesday at the gardens, which are home to an arts, craft and leisure centre.

When the first firefighters arrived the flames were burning through a flat and workshop, says Fire Service central communications manager Murray Dunbar.

It took about 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which had severely damaged the buildings, he said.

The fire is not yet being treated as suspicious but fire investigators will try to determine the cause on Wednesday.
