Firearms stolen during tsunami evacuation

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/11/2016

Several firearms have been stolen from a evacuated home near Nelson while it's occupants were heeding a tsunami warning, police say

The weapons, some antiques, were taken from the address in Riwaka, north of Motueka, on Monday morning.

"For someone to take advantage of others at a time like this is a deplorable act," said Inspector Mathew Arnold-Kelly.

"We do not want these firearms to fall into the wrong hands. Police have launched an investigation as a matter of priority".

Police are looking to speak to a male European in his mid-to-late 30s, wearing a grey hoodie and black pants, and who was riding a red push bike in the area at the time.

The theft came on top of burglaries of homes in Christchurch which were also evacuated following Monday's tsunami warning, sparked by the magnitude-7.5 earthquake in north Canterbury.
