Firefighters gear up for run up Sky Tower

© Getty Images More than 900 firefighters are about to climb the 52 floors of stairs in Auckland's Sky Tower.

The annual fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand is on Saturday.

On Friday evening a record $1.182 million had been pledged for this year, surpassing the $1.16 million in 2016.

This is the third year running the 13-year-old event has raised more than $1m.

Firefighters from across the country race up 1103 steps of the Sky Tower carrying 25kg of equipment.

The celebrity team includes Warriors chief executive Jim Doyle, former Batchelor NZ star Art Green, several Sky City executives and media personalities.

The 328m Sky Tower is the southern hemisphere's tallest man-made structure and is one of New Zealand's most recognisable landmarks.
