Fires in Canterbury treated as suspicious

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/05/2016

Police are treating a spate of fires in a riverbed in Canterbury as suspicious.

Firefighters fought several fires in the bed of the Selwyn River near State Highway One just north of Dunsandel at about 4pm on Sunday.

Police say a 4WD was seen in the riverbed near to where the fires were first noticed.

Anyone who saw it is urged to contact police.

On Saturday, firefighters also fought three separate blazes fanned by high winds, the largest of which was in an area of fallen trees and scrub south of Rakaia Terrace Road. They were all brought under control.

Conditions in Canterbury are dry.

Christchurch received just 15mm of rain in April, well below average, according to NIWA's National Climate Centre.
