Lotto © Lotto NZ Lotto The first of three Lotto winners to claim their share of Saturday's $40m prize pool say they checked a receipt with $13,368,688 written on it a hundred times in disbelief as they waited to collect the money.

While the other two winners are still outstanding, a couple from Dunedin have collected on their life-changing prize in record time, showing up at Lotto's office in Auckland first thing on Monday morning.

The pair were so much in disbelief after winning they called around friends on Saturday night asking how to double-check the ticket.

Eventually a local grocery supermarket, Fresh Choice, offered to open up for the night to let them come in to confirm the win.

"The Lotto lady had to get out of bed to come down and help check the ticket for us. It wasn't until the Lotto machine made the winning noise and we saw the prize claim receipt that he finally believed it," the winner said.

Her husband said they were given a receipt with $13,368,688 written on it.

"I pulled it out of my pocket to look at about 100 times [on Sunday]," he said.

"As for the winning ticket, I kept it in my undies draw until we had to bring it up to Auckland to collect our prize. No one would ever go looking in there."

The couple said they were now thinking about how to help others with their winnings.

"At one point we were talking about buying a whole street of houses and getting all of our mates to move in. I'm not sure I'll do that though," he said.

"But we'll stay the same people. In fact, I think we might go out for burgers tonight to celebrate."

There was a frantic bid to buy Lotto tickets ahead of Saturday's $40m draw, with 2.7 million tickets sold.

Between 5pm and 6pm on Saturday 3000 tickets a minute were being bought.
