Jono Naylor © Getty Jono Naylor National's first term list MP Jono Naylor has announced he won't stand in next year's election.

The Palmerston North-based MP was elected in 2014 after a career in local government and says he's decided it's time to go.

"After 16 years of standing for re-election every three years it's time to do something different," he said.

He denied it was that central government didn't live up to his expectations, or that he found it more difficult to achieve change as a backbencher that he did at the local level.

"I had a fair idea of what I was in for when I came here and I guess it's just for me having got here, it's been a great privilege to be here I've really enjoyed many aspects of it but ultimately I'm just looking to do something else I think in the future," he said.

Mr Naylor will serve out his first term and says he doesn't have a job offer or "any particular plans" beyond the election.
