First-up win for All Blacks Sevens

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 13/05/2016

Lewis Ormond scored twice as New Zealand opened their Paris rugby sevens campaign with a 35-10 win over Russia.

Russia drew first blood with a try to Denis Simplikevich, but the All Blacks Sevens replied almost immediately with a flurry of tries from Rieko Ioane, Regan Ware and Ormond to lead 21-5 at halftime.

Ormond crossed for his second soon after the restart, with Dylan Collier adding another before Vladislav Sozonov gave Russia the final say right on fulltime.

Sonny Bill Williams featured with some strong running and slick offloading, as the All Blacks look to finish the world series on a high note.

With only next week's London tournament remaining after Paris, New Zealand sit third in the overall standings, 12 points behind leaders Fiji and four points astray of second-placed South Africa.

The All Blacks Sevens will face Portugal in their second pool match in Paris before meeting Singapore tournament winners Kenya.

The Kiwis are without three seasoned sevens campaigners in Liam Messam, Tim Mikkelson and DJ Forbes, all forced out through injury.
