Fisher nearly runs down fishery officer

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 8/08/2016

A Tauranga fisherman has been fined $3000 after nearly running over a fisheries officer.

Bruce William Clifford Roberts, 50, was this month handed the fine and ordered to pay court costs in the Whakatane District Court after pleading guilty to behaving in a threatening manner towards a fishery officer in Port Ohope.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said the commercial fisher was signalled to pull over by a officer in March, but instead of stopping, turned his SUV towards the man, increasing his speed.

The officer had to move out of the way to avoid being hit after yelling "stop, fisheries" several times.

Roberts gave no explanation for the offending, MPI said.

He also had to pay $1500 for the return of the vehicle used in the incident.

Roberts has since apologised to the officer.
