Fishing boat grounds off Canterbury coast

It's not yet clear why a commercial fishing trawler grounded off the Canterbury coast in calm weather.

The 22m vessel, which police are not naming, sent out a distress message after beaching near the mouth of Lake Ellesmere on Thursday morning.

The three men aboard were unhurt and made it onto the beach.

The boat appeared to be intact and the skipper was making arrangements for the boat to be refloated, a police spokeswoman says.

Inquiries were being made into why the vessel beached, she said.
