Five people have been arrested after a car pursuit across Auckland and then a foot chase by police officers.

Police say the arrests follow a violent robbery on the North Shore on Monday, and they are looking for a sixth person.

They say the incident began at 3.13pm, when five masked offenders ran into an electronics shop in Sunnybrae Rd, Hillcrest, one armed with an axe and the others with metal bars.

Three staff members were threatened with the swinging axe and the metal bars, and the axe was smashed into the desk in front of one of the workers.

Police said glass display cabinets were shattered and electrical items were stolen.

An employee was shoved to the ground and kicked and punched about the head and face, but was believed to have escaped serious injury.

The offenders then fled in a stolen car, driven by a sixth person.

A witness provide police with the registration and shortly after a patrol car saw the vehicle heading towards west Auckland.

The officer followed the car at a distance and, at Westgate shopping centre, police signalled for the driver to stop, but he continued to drive on.

A 15-minute pursuit began involving multiple police units .

The car was stopped by road spikes and dumped at the Glen Eden shops and the occupants ran off.

Police said most of the offenders headed for Glen Eden train station, chased by officers on foot. One officer chased the driver of the car for around 800 metres.

Four people were initially arrested, and a fifth was located at a residential property on West Coast Rd a short time later.

Police said inquiries were continuing to find the sixth person.
