Psychoactive drugs as well as the products used to make them were seized during raids on 10 addresses across Christchurch in an effort to disrupt their illegal distribution network.

A 31-year-old man was charged with supplying psychoactive substances, possession for supply of psychoactive substances and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Three people, including two men and one women, aged between 25 and 27 also face drug charges.

A fifth person, a woman aged 29-years-old, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

The five people have either faced Christchurch District Court or will do so within the next two weeks.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Stewart says many people still maintain the view that synthetic drugs are still OK despite being outlawed in June, 2014.

"There's still a perception that because some synthetic drugs used to be referred to as a legal high, that it is somehow not as bad for you as other drugs," he said on Thursday.

"That is absolutely not the case."
