Fixing SH1 will cost close to $1b: Bridges

Reinstating SH1 between Picton and Christchurch will cost $812 million and the money will be in next month's budget, Transport Minister Simon Bridges has announced.

"The government's priority is to restore the pre-earthquake transport links to Kaikoura and its surrounding communities," he said on Thursday.

"The corridor is planned to reopen before the end of 2017."

There will also be money in the budget for KiwiRail to continue repairing the rail link.

Both links will be reinstated largely where they were previously, except for 2.5km of new alignment north of Kaikoura.

The November earthquake caused massive landslips that buried the highway in several places and wrecked the rail line.

Mr Bridges said the total cost of reinstating both links was estimated at between $1.1b and $1.3b.

Another $240m could be spent on improving the coastal road, which would come from the National Land Transport Fund.
