Five red parachute flares, five red handheld distress flares, orange smoke distress signals and red laser pin-point distress flares will be set off near the township north of Wellington between 5pm and 7pm as part of a marine search and rescue exercise.

They'll only be set off if weather conditions are suitable and police say it's a good opportunity for members of the public to learn what the flares look like when launched.

The flares will be launched off the Manawatu River mouth several kilometres out to sea.
