Flooding in Central Otago after storm

Parts of Central Otago have flooded after a thunderstorm.

State Highway 8 between Millers Flat and Roxburgh is closed due to flooding, NZTA says.

Police are advising motorists to take care, saying the highway at Ettrick is covered in water after a large electrical storm on Friday evening.

The Fire Service says it's responding to calls.

"It was a great big downpour and it rained really hard for half an hour or so," Marise from Millers Flat Holiday Park told NZ Newswire.

She said the highway was closed and power was out briefly, but a camper had just arrived to set up for the weekend.

Metservice had a thunderstorm warning in place for the region and for many other parts of New Zealand.

It's also predicting a wet weekend for many, saying a front preceded by a northerly flow will cross the country on Sunday, bringing widespread rain with brief heavy falls in areas exposed to the north.

Rainfall may reach warning criteria about northern Fiordland, Westland, Buller and the Nelson ranges.

In the North Island, rain is predicted from north Taranaki across to the Bay of Plenty.
