Floods and slips in Coromandel

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

One woman has been evacuated from her home and six people from four cars stranded by slips are bunking in with locals in the Coromandel.

Heavy rain has cut off access around Coromandel town, Colville and rural communities north of Colville, Thames-Coromandel District Council said on Sunday.

There is severe flooding on State Highway 25 on the straights to Manaia.

Ohinewai Ford, between Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay, has been damaged and is impassible to all vehicles, including 4X4 vehicles.

Slips have blocked roads around Port Charles and Waikawau Bay.

"Colville is flooded and there is a crack in the road approx 2.5km south of the village," the council says on its Facebook page.

It has posted a graphic created by Civil Defence Waikato picturing a boat, saying it can travel through water, and a car with a caption "this will munt if you drive through water" followed by "Don't drive like boaty".

The Coromandel Peninsula has many popular holiday destinations and school holidays run from April 16 to May 1.

The council says its team will be working through the night and the rain is forecast to ease on Monday.

Some properties have been damaged and emergency services will continue to deal with them on Monday.

Parts of Coromandel Peninsula endured flooding a month ago.
