Motorists have braved wild and wet conditions north of Wellington on Friday morning as a stretch of State Highway 1 has been hit by flooding.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is advising motorists to show caution along the 15km stretch from Waikanae to Otaki after heavy rain battered the lower North Island overnight.

The rain also closed SH53, between Featherston and Martinborough in the Wairarapa, after rising floodwaters swamped a bridge over the Ruamahanga River.

The bridge closure comes ahead the Martinborough Fair on Saturday and an expected rush of long weekend traffic.

Block Road in Lower Hutt and Ellice Street off Wellington's Basin Reserve, were also closed or impeded by flooding overnight.

The MetService says 52mm of rain fell in Lower Hutt on Thursday and 42mm in Wellington.
