Health Minister Jonathan Coleman launched the campaign in Wellington on Wednesday, reminding people the jabs are free for eligible patients until the end of July.

"Similar to previous years, a total of 1.2 million doses are expect to be distributed," he said.

Immunisation is free for people at high risk of complications and many employers also provide free vaccination for their staff.

High risk groups include those with long term health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease, kidney disease and cancer, as well as pregnant women and people over 65.

Dr Coleman says this year the vaccine has two new strains to ensure people are better protected this winter from strains of influenza circulating around the world.
