NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/06/2016 Cleo Fraser

Fresh charges have been laid against former fugitive Paul James Bennett.

The 53-year-old was last month deported from Australia and was arrested on his arrival in Christchurch on 48 charges including the sexual assault of a teenage girl and fraud amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Bennett again appeared in Christchurch District Court on Thursday where the Civil Aviation Authority laid 12 charges against him.

It's alleged he flew a helicopter between several New Zealand cities in March and April 2014 without a medical certificate or licence.

He appeared via video link and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 27.

Bennett was arrested aboard a yacht near Sydney in February last year after allegedly evading authorities on both sides of the Tasman for more than a decade.
