Football Ferns assistant coach Aaron McFarland has resigned to pursue a role with Auckland men's club team Central United.

McFarland, who has been an employee at New Zealand Football for six years, says the travel-heavy women's role wasn't providing the work-family balance he wanted.

He has been part of the Football Ferns coaching team for four years, helping them improve to a ranking high of 16th.

Football Ferns coach Tony Readings says McFarland was a valuable member of their coaching team and will be difficult to replace.
