The New Zealand women's football team have lost their final group match at the Rio Olympics 3-0 to France.

The Football Ferns needed at least a draw to be guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.

They were confident heading into the game, having successfully appealed against a red card given to captain Abby Erceg during their 1-0 win over Colombia, allowing her to take the field against France.

France scored their first goal late in the first half to take a psychological edge into the break, then extended their lead 18 minutes into the second half.

They added insult to injury two minutes into injury time when they received a spot kick for a foul by defender Ali Riley, who received a yellow card for the offence.

New Zealand could still scrape through to the knock-out stage, but must rely on other results going their way in order to make it to Saturday's playoffs.
