Former Auckland lawyer struck off

A former Auckland lawyer has been struck off the roll after admitting misappropriating $237,000 of client funds.

Warren Richard McFie, who consented to being struck off, had also admitted overcharging a client $42,417 over a 17-month period.

His lawyer told the NZ Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal that McFie was remorseful for his conduct and accepted the consequences.

He said McFie had sold his house and paid back all the money so clients had recovered their loss.

To complete the repayment, the tribunal ordered McFie to refund $42,417 to the client who had been overcharged.

McFie voluntarily surrendered his practising certificate in 2015 and was recently sentenced in the Auckland District Court to 12 months' home detention and 150 hours' community service.
