The helicopter pilot who died in a crash while battling fires in Christchurch's Port Hills has been named.

David Steven Askin, 38, from Waimakariri was one of 12 helicopter pilots fighting quickly spreading blazes in the area when he went down near the Sugar Loaf car park on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Askin was a former SAS soldier who helped repel a Taliban attack on a Kabul hotel in 2011, Fairfax reports.

The media outlet said it understood Mr Askin was wounded in the five hour battle, with former Defence Minister Wayne Mapp saying at the time the Kiwi troops came to the aid of Afghan police.

The Defence Force was not immediately able to confirm Mr Askin's service record.
