Former Silver Fern Margaret Forsyth will coach Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic until the end of the 2018 season.

The trans-Tasman netball league has been axed and Australia and New Zealand are forming their own domestic leagues next year with Magic coach Julie Fitzgerald heading to Sydney to lead the new team being set up there.

On Friday Magic said Forsyth has signed a two-year contract as head coach through until the end of the 2018 season.

Other coaching roles will be announced in the next few weeks.

Forsyth was assistant coach in 2014 and 2015 and was head coach of the franchise's Netball League team.

She says she looks forward to leading the team into the new Netball Elite League.

"The previous coaching teams have built an impressive legacy and I take the responsibility of continuing and building on that legacy very seriously. I will give everything to this role and am ready to take on the opportunity."

The New South Wales Swifts beat Magic in a semi-final of the trans-Tasman league.
