Forty caged for 40 hours in Auckland

Forty people are living in a cage for 40 hours this weekend to highlight animal welfare issues.

The Caged Being event in Auckland, organised by animal welfare group SAFE, starts on Friday evening.

A 56sqm cage set up in a disused shop is to be locked at 10pm.

The idea is to mimic the boring, under-stimulated life of factory farming animals.

Participants will be allowed out to the toilet at set intervals, for limited periods of time.

Plain muesli and soymilk will be served four times per day and water will be available.

A livestream of the cage on Friday evening showed people sitting around in groups inside the cage. It had about 1700 views after about an hour.
