Four children have been injured at an Auckland childcare centre after a tree fell down in an incident set to be investigated by Worksafe New Zealand.

Following the incident at Discoveries Educare on Gillies Ave in Newmarket, the children were rushed to Starship Hospital.

A St John spokeswoman said one child was in a critical condition, another in a serious condition and two more in a moderate condition.

Police said they were advised of the incident at 1.40pm and have now notified Worksafe NZ.

"The fallen tree was growing within the daycare centre grounds and has fallen within the property," police said in a statement.

"Because this is considered to be a workplace, Worksafe NZ have been advised."

A Worksafe NZ spokesman said the agency had two inspectors at the childcare centre and was conducting an investigation.
