Trent Boult and Martin Guptill are among four prominent Black Caps released by their Indian Premier League teams.

Colin Munro and Corey Anderson were also scythed by teams during the transfer window as rosters get reshaped for 2017.

The Kiwis were among 28 overseas players released by the eight teams.

They must now pin their hopes on the February 4 player auction if they are to take part in the lucrative Twenty20 league.

Boult, ranked the world's best one-day international bowler, took a limited part in the title run of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Opening batsman Guptill has been a dominant performer at international limited overs level but surprisingly failed to earn a contract this year before being selected as an injury replacement by the Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai have also dispensed with allrounder Corey Anderson while Kolkata Knight Riders have cut the hard-hitting Munro.

Five New Zealanders have been retained by their teams, including captain Kane Williamson and retired skipper and IPL veteran Brendon McCullum.

Retained Kiwis: Brendon McCullum (Gujarat Lions), Mitchell McClenaghan (Mumbai Indians), Tim Southee (Mumbai Indians), Adam Milne (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad).

Released Kiwis: Colin Munro (Kolkata Knight Riders), Corey Anderson (Mumbai Indians), Martin Guptill (Mumbai Indians), Trent Boult (Sunrisers Hyderabad).
