Four rescued from capsized boat in Porirua

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/09/2016

Four people left clinging to rocks and their overturned boat in the Porirua Harbour are recovering after a timely rescue.

Police say the group, who weren't wearing life jackets, were treated for hypothermia and swallowing sea water, with three taken to Wellington Hospital, after their small boat flipped at about 11am on Saturday.

One man tried to cling to the hull of the semi-submerged vessel about 200m from shore, while three others tried to swim to shore, but ended up grabbing on to rocks 50m out.

The Coastguard was called in to save the man at the boat, who was exhausted by the time rescuers arrived.

The other three were pulled in by a police officer and members of the public.

Police said life jackets had been available to the crew, but were not being worn at the time of the incident.
