The body found on Fox Glacier a fortnight ago has been identified as belonging to a British woman who was among a group killed in a helicopter crash 16 months ago.

Cynthia Charlton, 70, was one of seven people - six tourists and the pilot - who died in the crash on the glacier in November 2015.

There were no survivors from a flight that also included Mrs Charlton's husband, Nigel, 66, among the passengers.

Police say they have advised the family in Britain of the formal identification.

The body was discovered in a crevasse by a tramper on March 2 and recovered four days later.
