Ryan Fox produced a smart finish to place ninth in his first tournament as a fully-fledged European Tour golfer.

Fox closed with an even-par 72 to drop two places to ninth at the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast, having been firmly in contention at the midway point.

Holding a share of third after his second round at the Royal Pines Resort, New Zealand No.2 Fox carded 73 and 72 to lose ground.

It was nevertheless a satisfying start to the European Tour season, with Fox having attained his card on this year's secondary tour.

His seven-under tally left him 12 strokes behind American winner Harold Varner III, who closed with a 65 on Sunday to see off a host of Australians.

Overnight leader Andrew Dodt was second, two shots behind Varner and two ahead of Adam Scott.

Kiwi No.1 Danny Lee shot 71 to share 25th on three-under.
