Ryan Fox has made the most of a late call-up to the Dubai Desert Classic, climbing into a share of eighth following a first-round 68.

Fox's four-under round was the best of the 66 afternoon golfers who had to contend with breezier conditions at the European Tour event.

The 30-year-old was an injury alternate for the $US2.65 million ($NZ3.63 million) tournament and only learned he would play about 24 hours out.

The 30-year-old shot six birdies and two bogeys. He held a share of fourth before dropping a shot on his final hole, the par-four ninth.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia leads on seven-under, one stroke clear of Chilean Felipe Aguilar and South African George Coetzee.

Former world No.1 Tiger Woods made a forgettable start, failing to shoot a birdie in his 77.
