Ryan Fox's fourth-placed finish at the Australian Open in Sydney wasn't quite enough to secure him an early spot in next year's British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Fox finished in a tie with four others after shooting a final round 71 on Sunday at Royal Sydney for a four-round tally of 278, two shots astray of US winner Jordan Spieth.

The Australian Open was the first event in a qualifying series which offers 44 places at the British Open on July 16-23 next year.

Fox was nine world ranking spots outside early qualification, with the first three places going to Australians Ashley Hall, Cameron Smith and Aaron Baddeley.

The 29-year-old New Zealander is currently ranked 158th in the world, nine places behing 149th-ranked Baddeley.

The next event in the Open qualifying series is the Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club from January 19-22.
