New Zealand's Alex Frame has continued his fine recent form with a third-placed finish in the Herald Sun Tour's prologue time trial.

Frame was pipped by Dutch winner Danny van Poppel from the powerhouse Team Sky and Brenton Jones of Australia.

Jones is teammate of Frame's at British continental outfit JLT Condor.

Van Poppel covered the 2.1km course in 2 minutes 32 seconds - edging Jones by 0.9sec.

Frame underlined his ability with two stage wins at the New Zealand Cycle Classic in the Wairarapa last week.

A member of the New Zealand world champion team pursuit foursome in 2015, he is emerging as the pre-eminent sprinter in the growing crop of Kiwi offshore professionals.

There are 16 Kiwis in the 104-strong field including Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate, Greg Henderson and Joseph Cooper, who is coming off victory at the New Zealand road championships and the NZ Cycle Classic.

Tour favourite is three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome, who dominated last year's race with the help of his Team Sky colleagues.
