Alex Frame has powered to a bunch sprint victory in the third stage of the New Zealand Cycle Classic while another Kiwi holds onto the tour leader's yellow jersey.

Frame was set up superbly by his JLT Condor teammates, who led the way in reeling in a four-rider breakaway over the closing kilometres of a 136km leg from Masterton to Martinborough.

British UCI Continental outfit JLT Condor is one of the strongest teams on the five-day tour, with 23-year-old Frame the only Kiwi in their ranks.

A former track cycling world championships gold medallist in the team pursuit, he showcased his speed on Tuesday to hold off Malaysian Mohammad Abdul Halil and Australian Sean Whitfield.

Because of the pack finish, there was little change to the general classification with two stages remaining.

NZ National Team rider James Oram is still 10sec clear of Australian Sam Crome, who won stage two for IsoWhey Sports SwissWellness.

Day four comprises a more taxing route from Masterton to Martinborough over 143 km, taking in Carterton, Greytown and Featherston.
