France shock NZ 24-0 in Singapore Sevens

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/04/2016

A Jeremy Aicardi brace has helped France stun New Zealand 24-0 on the opening day of the Singapore Sevens.

A week ago in Hong Kong, the French had led New Zealand 17-0 in pool play before being run down 19-17.

There was no such comeback this time around by the All Black Sevens, who were starved of possession and showed defensive frailties.

Aicardi got his first with less than a minute on the clock after France won possession from their own kick-off.

Julien Candelon grabbed his side's second just before halftime.

Aicardi then completed his brace before Virimi Vakatawa, who was a constant danger with his offloading, closed out the win with a 70-metre run.

New Zealand had gone into the tournament, the eighth in the 10-leg world series, second on the points table behind Fiji, to whom they had lost in the Hong Kong final.

Their other pool opponents in Singapore, which is back on the circuit after a 10-year absence, are Canada and the United States.
