Police are looking for a French tourist who has not contacted his family in France since a tramp in Abel Tasman National Park.

Search and rescue staff have checked huts in the park and found no sign of 32-year-old Eddy Paluch.

He is fit, an experienced tramper and usually travels alone.

In his most recent communication with his family on January 6 Mr Paluch said he had an ankle injury and was on his way to the coast to see the dolphins.

Police are contacting rental car companies and are talking to water taxi operators in the area of the popular South Island national park.

He arrived in New Zealand on December 28 and was expected back at work in France on January 12.

Police are asking anyone who has seen Mr Paluch, or has information about his movements, to contact them.
