Victor Roucher died after falling in an icy area near the mountain's summit while climbing with a companion on Tuesday.

Mr Roucher had been in New Zealand for six months, police say.

The other man, also from France, was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with minor injuries and had now returned to Wellington.

Police earlier said the pair were well-prepared and had all the necessary gear, unlike a group that had been rescued earlier in the day.
