Frenzied knife attack after break-up bid

A man who stabbed his girlfriend nearly 30 times after she told him the baby she was carrying was not his has been jailed for at least 17 years for her murder.

The 24-year-old known only as Akash had earlier pleaded guilty to murdering Gurpreet Kaur while she sat in his in car in April this year and then dumping her body at Hampton Downs.

Sentencing Akash in the High Court at Auckland on Tuesday, Justice Matthew Palmer it was a "persistent and frenzied attack" which inflicted 29 cuts and stab wounds in hers calp, face, neck, chest and abdomen.

The court heard 22-year-old Gaur, who was seven to 10 weeks pregnant, had told Akash she wanted to end their year-long relationship and the baby was not his. Akash, who said he had taken meth beforehand, grabbed a knife in the car a stabbed her repeatedly.

Akash had been in New Zealand since 2013 on a student visa which expired in May and he will be deported after serving his sentence.

A Corrections report said he had stopped taking prescription medication to control his psychotic episodes while in New Zealand and started using meth.
