Frost, cold sweeps country

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 1/07/2016

Kiwis from Southland to Northland have woken up to heavy frost and, for some, their coldest morning of the year.

Central Otago and Cromwell were feeling a nippy -7C at 7am on Saturday, with frosts at "severe" levels across region, Weatherwatch said.

Further north, the temperature had dropped as low as -9C in South Waiouru, the MetService said.

Even Aucklanders woke up to -2C and frost, while Rotorua and Taranaki were at -3C.

WeatherWatch's Philip Duncan said widespread frost across Northland meant many sub-tropical plants could be badly damaged or wiped out over the weekend

More heavy frost could be expected on Saturday night especially in the North Island as the cold moves up the country, he said.
