Full compensation for live organ donors

© Getty Images Parliament's health select committee has recommended that live organ donors receive 100 per cent compensation for lost income.

At present donors are only eligible for the sickness benefit while they recuperate.

The committee has released its report on a member's bill, drafted by National's Chris Bishop, which aims to make it easier for people to donate organs and lift New Zealand's low donation rate.

The bill set a rate of 80 per cent compensation but after hearing submissions from donors it decided on "cost neutrality" and changed the rate to 100 per cent.

The bill still has to pass its second reading, committee stage and third reading before becoming law.
